Join us for a creative workshop inspired by the carvings, graffiti and marks that have been left on the slate walls outside Dinorwig Quarry Hospital over the years.

We will look closely at the carvings - names, drawings and marks left by ordinary people as a way of recording their presence and leaving traces on the landscape. What motivated them to do that? What stories could be hiding behind these marks?

Under the care of Rhodri Owen, participants will create rubbings of the carvings that attract their attention, before using the patterns, together with historical photographs and other elements, to build a unique layered work of art. We will also use cyanotype – a printing process that creates striking blue images – to record the traces of our own hands, adding a new layer to the stories etched in the slate.

Throughout the workshop, we will work together to imagine and create a story that is inspired by the people who were associated with the hospital and the quarry. As more people participate, the story will grow and develop, creating connections between different voices, ideas and experiences.

This work will be displayed on temporary boards around the museum as the building works progress - come and contribute to the ongoing story!
