About
Caernarfon Castle is probably one of the best-preserved castles in Wales. It was built by Edward 1st during his conquest of Wales in order to subdue the Welsh. Construction of the castle began in 1283 and took an unbelievable 47 years to build and cost around £25,000 to build. The castle sits on a former mot and bailey castle that existed on the site for the 11th century and the design of the castle reflects that of roman architecture in Constantinople. The Eagle Tower and its three huge turrets are probably the most impressive part of the castle – the castle was also the birth place of Kind Edwards son, Edward of Caernarfon who was to become the first English Prince of Wales.
In 1969 Caernarfon Castle was the venue of the investiture of Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.
Today the castle is managed by CADW, inside the castle you will also find The Welsh fusiliers museum. A must visit whenever in Caernarfon.
