Things to do in Pwllheli

Things to do in Pwllheli

Pwllheli is a community and the main market town located on the south facing coastline of the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd.  Pwllheli and its surrounding area have fine beaches, busy market town with art galleries and a very popular sailing and watersports centre.  To the east, lies the Snowdonia National Park and to the west, you’ll discover the finest natural, rugged coastline in Wales.

A mile west of Nefyn is Porth Dinllaen, a shoreline hamlet looking onto a pristine, sweeping bay.  A hidden gem is Nefyn Beach, predominantly a sandy beach where dogs are only allowed on the Northern side of the beach, away from the harbour.  Access to the beach is steep, car park and public toilets.

A 1 mile walk along a rugged piece of coastline of Aberdaron is Whistling Sands .  Dogs are permitted on the walking trail, however they are not permitted on the beach during the winter months  1ST October – 31st March. The walk is steep in parts, can be muddy, and the route leads through some grazed fields.

Another hidden gem not for from Pwllheli is Porth Neigwl, a rural beach popular with surfers and kayakers.  The beach stretches for around 4 miles with car park 200m walk via footpath to the beach.   Dogs are welcome.

A sheltered sandy beach overlooking Cardigan Bay is Llanbedrog Beach, on the outskirts of Abersoch with its row of colourful beach huts.  There is a National Trust car park and dogs are welcome on the beach. There are steps leading down to the beach from the car park.

St Beuno's Church, at Pistyll on the outskirts of Pwllheli dates from the 12th century and lies in a grassy hollow beside a stream and close to the sea.  In the 6th century, this spot was a place of solitude for Beuno, a missionary who retreated here for peace and quiet.  It later became a hospice for pilgrims travelling to Bardsey.   This i a delightful small church, untouched by time and still preserving the spirit of the old Celtic Christianity.
