The Scenic Route

Wherever you go in North Wales, chances are there's a scenic route to take you there. Trouble is, which scenic route do you take? Do you take the A5 west to Betws y Coed in the Conwy Valley? (you'll find more than 20,000 acres to explore on foot at Gwydir Forest alone, so be sure to conserve some energy for the gift shops).

Or do you explore Nant Ffrancon Pass? - 'Gateway to Snowdonia' and scene for the book 'I Bought a Mountain' by Canadian mountain enthusiast Thomas Firbank. You can discover another famous mountain enthusiast at Snowdonia's Pen y Gwryd Hotel: Sir Edmund Hilary and his team stayed here whilst training for the 1953 Everest expedition.

How about heading down to the village of Beddgelert in Gwynedd? setting for the legend of Prince Llewelyn and his dog Gelert. More recently, Beddgelert has picked up more than its fair share of Wales and Britain in Bloom awards.

Do you follow the River Glaslyn on foot or hop on the Welsh Highland Railway as it runs through the very heart of Snowdonia? Or head to Snowdonia's coast to the Italianate village of Portmeirion designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, famous setting for the classic 60s TV series 'The Prisoner'? Or do you explore the Ceiriog Valley, (Prime Minister Lloyd George's 'little bit of heaven on earth'), walk the Alwen Trail to the Hiraethog Moors (home to Wales' largest red squirrel population) and scale Moel Famau (highest point in the Vale of Clwyd) you'll be ready for a nice lie down.
