Itinerary/Attractions and Activities
Enjoy the freedom and flexibility allowed with the North And Mid Wales Flexi Rover Pass which allows 3 days bus and rail travel within a boundary of Holyhead-Crewe-Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth-Pwllheli-Holyhead. The pass includes travel on most local bus services and on all mainline train services including the Conwy Valley Line which follows the flow of the River Conwy as it meanders its way inland.
Your journey through unsurpassed scenery starts in the beautiful Conwy Valley with the choice of either 3 star graded Hotel accommodation in the market town of Llanrwst, ideally situated for the Snowdonia National Park, its location also gives easy access to the glorious 20,000 acre Gwydir Forest with superb woodland walks. Alternatively 4 star graded Guest House accommodation in the village of Betws-y-Coed nestling deep in the heart of the Conwy Valley, a gateway to some of the most spectacular and exhilarating walks in Britain. Luggage transfers are provided from the train to your accommodation.
Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast looking for long tough trails or someone who prefers to take things a little easier, with young children in mind perhaps, this area offers a wide selection of self led walks.
Choose from one of the suggested routes as selected in the popular publication 'Walks Along The Conwy Valley Line' such as the Grey Mare's Tail Trail (8km/2hrs.30min). This walk (apart from a section by the waterfall) is all on a surfaced road and ascends steeply to a height from where the entire valley can be overlooked. The descent takes you via 17th Century Gwydir Uchaf Chapel and Gwydir Castle (famous for its grand suite of Tudor rooms). Stop for light refreshments at the National Trust's 15th Century tea room 'Tu Hwnt i'r Bont' before continuing over the hump backed arch of Pont Fawr reputedly designed by Inigo Jones in 1636.
Walk 5 Mountain Lake Walk (4km/2hrs) starts at Betws-y-Coed and ends at the beautiful waters of Llyn Elsi, 250m above sea level. Follow the easily accessible wide forest track through forest and moor as it rises, before opening out to reveal a stunning panorama of mountains and water. In the distance can be seen the ridges of Tryfan and Glyder Fach. Take in the intense beauty of this area as buzzards wheel in the thermals above and trout jump in the clear waters.
Return to your accommodation and enjoy a much deserved high quality dinner.
'Conwy Valley A Long History' is an informative publication that will give you a valuable insight into the history of this beautiful valley.
